World Haemophilia Day
April 17, World Haemophilia Day, is recognised by haemophilia organisations and others who support treatment of the disease around the world. The purpose of this designated day is to provide an opportunity to increase awareness of haemophilia.
The theme of this year's World Haemophilia Day is "40 years of progress in global haemophilia care" in celebration of the World Federation of Haemophilia's (WFH) 40th anniversary in 2003.
Together with national haemophilia organisations, clinicians, industry, and governments, WFH has made steady progress over the years in the fight for better haemophilia care. Today, the WFH has projects in 25 developing countries. However, much still needs to be done. In countries with limited resources, the vast majority of people with haemophilia remain undiagnosed and untreated.
This World Haemophilia Day will highlight the critical need for increased diagnosis and treatment, and the launch of the WFH's new Global Alliance for Progress (GAP) in haemophilia. The goal of GAP is to more than double the number of people with haemophilia diagnosed and treated in up to 40 countries over the next 10 years.
