Primary Immune Deficiency
Scandinavian Regional Meeting Report:
Ystad, Sweden, 4-5 Sept 2004
The Swedish Physicians Association for Primary Immune Deficiency (Sveriges Läkares Intresseförening för Primär Immunbrist) (SLIPI) recently held a two-day educational meeting, that attracted more than 90 participants from all over Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Norway.
Both physicians and industry representatives attended intriguing lectures given by invited experts in Primary Immune Deficiency (PID) such as Dr. Webster from London, UK and Lennart Hammarström from Huddinge, Sweden.
Octapharma representatives provided information about the use of their solvent detergent treated immunoglobulin products, Octagam® and Gammanorm®, for use in patients with primary and secondary immune deficiencies.
Gammanorm is a subcutaneous formulation of immunoglobulin, specially designed home treatment, whereas Octagam is delivered intravenously, usually in the hospital setting.
In the Nordic region, subcutaneous delivery of immunoglobulin is preferred over the intravenous route. Gammanorm is the product of choice, supported by its 13 year history and extensive clinical data. The International Business Manager for Gammanorm, Marie Steiding says, “Care givers and patients know what to expect from Gammanorm. Approximately 80% of patients choose subcutaneous home treatment with Gammanorm because of its advantages of flexibility and freedom to choose where and when.” Octapharma has about 80% of the market share for subcutaneous immunoglobulins in Sweden and 100% in Norway.
At the conclusion of the presentations the first day, an Octapharma reception offered distinguished guests an opportunity to share their views and experiences of PID whilst enjoying a specially labeled Gammanorm beer!
Octapharma would like to thank the SLIPI-board for their organization and for making the meeting a success.
