Preview of the Great SD Plasma Debate

The Annual Congress of the International Society of Blood Transfusion (ISBT) will be held this year in the magnificent city of Edinburgh, Scotland from 11th-15th July. The event is expected to attract delegates from all over the world who can expect a first class scientific programme.

The ISBT Scientific Committee together with the British Blood Transfusion Service has put together an informative mix of plenary sesions, symposia and round-table dicussions to cover a wide variety of topics. They have promised that there will be plenty for everyone whether they are a clinician, scientist, involved with donor recruitment, from a world class institution at the forefront of transfusion medicine or struggling in a situation with limited resources.

Delegates will also be able to attend an Octapharma sponsored satellite symposia entitled: The Great SD Plasma Debate - Time to Explode the Myths.

Co-Chaired by Professor Peter Hellstern, Germany and Dr Georg Riedler, Switzerland, the symposia will address some of the controversies that have surounded solvent detergent virus inactivated plasma. It will also question whether all SD treated plasmas are the same, and provide evidence to show that differences in the manufacture of these products can lead to vastly different clinical outcomes. Attendees will also hear that SD plasma may prevent one of the serious complications of transfusion medicine, namely Transfusion Related Acute Lung Injury (TRALI). Finally, new data will be presented by Dr Volha Chekrizova on the use of Octapharma´s SD plasma - Octaplas, in Ireland.
