WFH Story continued....The Inga Marie Nilsson Award
Professor Inga Marie Nilsson (1923 1999) was a pioneer in the research and treatment of haemophilia. Her model for prophylactic treatment has now become the guiding principle for centers all over the world.
The Inga Marie Nilsson Award was initiated in the year 2000 by professor Nilsson´s family in cooperation with WFH and Pharmacia Plasma Products (now Octapharma).
The recipient(s) should be individuals/projects who have contributed substantially to the advancement of haemophilia care, especially in the developing world. The selection for the 2004 award proved too diffcult to award to one person, given the number of excellent candidates who applied. Therefore, this year two projects were choosen to receive the award. Both were presented at the 2004 WFH congress by the WFH (Brian O'Mahony and Dr. Paul Giangrande ) and Octaphartma (Inger Antonsson).
The 2004 Inga Marie Nilsson awards were presented to:
Biomedical scientist Angus McCraw,
UK
, for his dedicated work to improve world-wide laboratory diagnosis of blood coagulation disorders and to Drs Brian Luke and Man-
Chiu Poon
,
Canada , for their efforts to establish a Haemophilia Treatment Centre Collaborative Network for
China

Angus McCraw, who is the Chair of the WFH Laboratory Sciences Committee, has conducted numerous workshops and training sessions to improve laboratory diagnosis of haemophilia, including the understanding of the principles of internal quality control and external quality assessment. The “Training the Trainers” workshop is specifically designed to teach clinicians and senior laboratory personnel from developing countries how to lead workshops specific to their own needs. Read "The Bottom Line Is Quality," by Angus McCraw , to learn more about improving laboratory diagnosis of blood coagulation disorders.

Drs Brian Luke and Man-Chui Poon and their centers have, for several years, been involved in WFH twinning projects with Chinese centers. Through their twinning activities they expanded their working relationship with other Chinese centers and in March 2004 the idea of a Collaborative Network for
China
was unanimously endorsed by six major treatment centers. The network will promote collaboration; mobilize resources and expertise from existing centers and coordinate planning and development for the country. It will also seek support from central and provincial Health Ministries, a prerequisite for a successful advancement of haemophilia care in
China
