May 9th, 2006 Octapharma sponsors exhibition and educational symposium at the upcoming WFH congress in Vancouver, Canada
The congress program will feature internationally recognized experts in hemophilia care and research, making it the pre-eminent event for those interested in hemophilia. Octapharma will sponsor an educational symposium on May 24th, “FVIII-neutralizing Inhibitors - Today's Major Safety Concern for a Patient with Hemophilia A.” The symposium will focus on the major safety concern in today’s hemophilia therapy - the development of neutralizing antibodies (inhibitors). These inhibitors make optimal prophylactic treatment very difficult to achieve. In affected patients, high titre antibodies against factor VIII or factor IX result in poor control of bleedings, which may have a dramatic influence on the patients life and severely jeopardize the short and long-term outcome of the disease. The speakers will try to shed some light on this important theme, as well as on other inhibitor-related topics by introducing several different perspectives: the patients perspective, the clinican's perspective, the regulator's perspective. In addition, current data on the incidence of inhibitors as well as the treatment modalities for eliminating them will be discussed. Finally, the question of whether it is time to introduce VWFcontaining FVIII concentrates to reduce the inhibitor risk will also be explored.
