In July 2002 Octapharma acquired the Plasma Products Division of Biovitrum (originally Kabi, later Pharmacia). The operations in Stockholm have been involved in plasma fractionation since the 1940s. The first plasma protein, albumin, was supplied to the market in 1949 followed by Gamma Globulin in 1950. Additionally in the mid 1960s, Kabi was one of the two first commercial companies in the world to introduce a Factor VIII concentrate.
After the acquisition of the Stockholm plant, extensive investments were initiated with the objective to upgrade the facility and reach an annual capacity of 600,000 litres of plasma. Recently, in-house PCR testing for incoming plasma has been developed. In total, more than 100 million Euros have been invested in the Stockholm plant, which now employs more than 450 people.
A larger investment plan will be deployed in the next 5 years in order to further increase the production capacity to an equivalent of 1,2 million litres per year.
The products currently produced include Factor VIII and Factor IX concentrates, Antithrombin, Immunoglobulins and albumin. The transfer of the octanate® manufacturing process has been finalized in 2004 and the Swedish plant is today the largest producer of Factor VIII in the group. The pharmaceutical development of Octapharma´s recombinant factor VIII, Octagenate, the first recombinant product based on a human cell-line, has been transferred from Octagene, Munich to Octapharma Stockholm. The objective is to reach clinical phase within 1-2 years and to implement a production line at industrial scale in the following years.
The new office and laboratory facilities began operation in the summer of 2005, thus completing the concentration of all Swedish units on Octapharma AB-owned premises."
