Georgy's Story
Georgy was diagnosed with severe haemophilia A when he was only one year old. There are carriers in the family and one of Georgy’s uncles also has the condition. Later, when he was almost three, Georgy was found to have factor VIII inhibitors after he was treated unsuccessfully with one recombinant and several plasma-derived factor VIII concentrates.
The inhibitor-titre was approximately 7 BU and immune tolerance induction (ITI) with octanate® was started immediately in September 2007.
Before ITI treatment started, Georgy had constant pain and bleeds approximately once a month in the soft tissue and joints. He needed assistance in almost everything, even to go to the toilet, since he was not able to walk himself. It was very upsetting for Georgy to see his own brother playing with other children without being able to join in too.
ITI treatment was a great success and the inhibitors have completely disappeared. Georgy is feeling great and in the last two years has had only one bleeding episode. He is an extremely lively and active little boy and his new-found independence has done wonders for his self-confidence.
As his mother, I feel much more confident and am overcoming my fear of letting Georgy go out alone. Now we visit the swimming pool and he is also allowed to play with his brother and other children in the playground.
