Individualised bleeding management in trauma

Trauma-related mortality has reduced dramatically since the introduction of techniques to rapidly control bleeding and maintain haemostasis.  Advances in our understanding of bleeding coupled with developments in technology and the introduction of new treatment approaches mean we are now better equipped than ever before to identify and treat the underlying causes of haemorrhage in the bleeding trauma patient.

Despite the progress seen in the last decade, opportunities remain to further improve outcomes for patients.  Current approaches do not reliably identify trauma-induced coagulopathy, for example, and treatment is often delayed unnecessarily with resulting morbidity and mortality for patients. The use of point of care testing and treatment algorithms to direct the use of coagulation factor concentrates have been shown to reduce blood loss and transfusion requirements in trauma patients, yet their use is far from universal.

These gaps in how trauma is managed will be addressed in the Octapharma EISAC Symposium “Individualised bleeding management in trauma, chaired by Dr Maurizio Berardino, Italy.  Topics will also include the challenges and feasibility of prehospital treatment with blood and plasma products versus coagulation factor concentrates, and the key parameters to measure to enable individualisation of bleed management.  The meeting will feature a Question-and-Answer session and an expert panel discussion on the science and clinical application of individualised bleeding management in trauma.

Saturday 4th of June 12:30 - 13:30 h CET.
